Wander into any “warung” on the beautiful island of Bali in South East Asia, and you will likely be welcomed with a glass of this delicious, ice cold Balinese ginger drink. A simple mix of freshly grated ginger, sugar and lemon, the herbal beverage is said to have an invigorating effect on the body whilst stimulating and aiding digestion. Why not welcome your guests this summer with an exotic Balinese drink?
A Refreshing and Healthy Summer Drink
Ginger is one of the world’s most well known and frequently used herbs. Most famous for its use in Asian cooking, or perhaps as the spicy ingredient to ginger bread and cakes, ginger also has a long list of medicinal properties.
Scientifically proven to help alleviate nausea, morning sickness, digestive problems and to help prevent blood clots and stomach ulcers, the herb has also been used in traditional medicines throughout a wide range of cultures over a history of more than 2500 years. Some as yet unproven uses for ginger also include the treatment of fungal infections, immune system disorders, malaria, snake bites, depression, alcohol withdrawal and even as an aid to weight loss!
Aside from a seemingly endless list of health benefits, ginger also makes a delicious and refreshing thirst-quencher to offer guests at a summer barbeque or get-together. Here is a ginger drink recipe based upon the traditional Balinese beverage. Feel free to play around and experiment as the spicy kick of ginger will add an exotic twist to many other drinks from fruit juices to whisky and punch.
Exotic Ginger Drink Recipe
  • 1 handful ginger, peeled and grated
  • 3 heaped tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 litres boiling water
  • 2 lemons, sliced
  • Sprigs of mint to serve (optional)
How to Make Ginger Drink
  1. Place grated ginger and sugar into a large, heat proof jug and cover with boiling water. Leave to cool at room temperature whilst the sugar dissolves and the flavours infuse.
  2. Pour contents of jug through a tea strainer or sieve to remove grated ginger.
  3. Refrigerate.
Serving: Pour over ice and lemon slices and garnish with fresh mint leaves.
Top Tips for a Deliciously Spicy Summer Beverage
  • Old ginger will give a little more kick – look out for the drier looking “roots” and avoid the freshly harvested ones, if you like a little spice.
  • If you find the recipe too spicy for your tastes, dilute by adding a little extra water. Alternatively mix with fresh orange juice for an exotic twist on a classic summer drink.
  • Sweeten the drink by replacing the brown sugar with 3 tbsp honey to give yet another variation on this traditional Balinese drink.
