One of its common names is Soldier's Woundwort, and its Latin name is derived from the Greek hero Achilles. Yarrow can be applied directly to cuts to stop bleeding. It also is anti-inflammatory and astringent, which enhance its wound-healing properties. It makes a good addition to all-purpose healing salves.

Yarrow also has many other medicinal properties. It is a diaphoretic, and can be made into a tea to induce sweating at the onset of colds and flu. It works well in combination with elder flowers.
