Green tea and vitamins are popular tools for increasing energy. In fact, aside from water, green tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. The high level of antioxidants -- substances that fight cell-damaging free radicals -- in green tea make it the healthiest of all varieties of tea. Talk to your doctor before using green tea or vitamins for energy.

Green Tea for Energy

Although the polyphenols in green tea contain health-promoting properties, it's the alkaloids theobromine and theophylline that promote energy. In addition, green tea contains approximately 2 percent to 4 percent caffeine per cup, which affects thinking and alertness and stimulates the nervous system.

Vitamins for Energy

Vitamins do not provide energy directly, although your body needs certain vitamins to produce chemical reactions necessary for energy and proper functioning of major organs. Taking a multi-vitamin can help fill in nutritional gaps, support energy production and overall health. Talk to your doctor about the best energy-enhancing vitamins for you.

Precautions

Although green tea and vitamins are considered beneficial to health, they may cause adverse effects in some individuals. Taking high doses of vitamins can cause health problems. Green tea may be dangerous to people with high blood pressure, heart conditions, liver disease, anemia or anxiety. Excessive consumption of green tea, more than 3 cups daily, may promote bone loss as calcium is excreted in urination. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of vitamins and green tea.

Considerations

Although vitamins and green tea are often effective at increasing energy levels, don't discount the basics to health and wellness. Eating a balanced diet, getting proper rest and exercising regularly are still the most significant ways to energize your body. Consider green tea and vitamins a complementary therapy rather than a foundation for health and energy.
